High-pressure cleaning vs. pipe milling: what helps when

Flush or mill? The right method depends on the type of deposit and the condition of the pipe. A practical comparison.

High-pressure cleaning vs. pipe milling: what helps when

When a pipe no longer flows freely, two proven methods are available: high-pressure cleaning and pipe milling. Both can clear a blockage, but they work in very different ways. The right choice depends on the type of deposit, the pipe material and the condition of the line.

How high-pressure cleaning works

High-pressure cleaning sends water into the pipe under pressure through a hose. A special nozzle directs the jet in all directions, loosening dirt while the water carries the loosened material towards the manhole. The method is particularly suitable for fat, food scraps, sand, sludge and other soft deposits.

High-pressure cleaning is gentle on the pipe material when the pressure and nozzle match the line. It can be used for private house connections as well as commercial and municipal sewers. Before the job, we check the pipe diameter and whether there are any damaged sections.

How pipe milling works

Pipe milling uses a remote-controlled milling tool. It is guided through the pipe with a camera and removes hard deposits mechanically. This includes roots, limescale incrustations, cement residue, mortar and stubborn encrustations. The milling head uses rotating tools to restore the pipe's cross-section.

Milling is necessary when flushing alone is not enough. Roots cannot be flushed away; they have to be cut out. At the same time, the method is more demanding: the pipe material, wall thickness and condition must be checked beforehand. A camera inspection is therefore a fixed part of the job.

The direct comparison

High-pressure cleaning: well suited to fat, sand, sludge, food scraps and soft deposits. Fast, gentle and often the first choice. It reaches its limits with roots or hard limescale.

Pipe milling: the right solution for roots, limescale, cement and hard encrustations. It restores the cross-section but requires more preparation and a precise inspection of the line.

Combination: in many cases, the combination is the best approach. First, milling removes hard obstacles. High-pressure cleaning then flushes the loosened material out of the pipe. This combination often produces a permanently clear result.

What we check before the job

Before every cleaning, we use a camera or pressure measurement to establish what is blocking the line. We then decide whether flushing, milling or a combination is necessary. This avoids unnecessary work and protects the pipe. At AVA SERVICE in Herzogenrath and Aachen, you receive clear documentation and a fixed price before work begins.

What matters in the diagnosis

A blanket approach of “flush first, then mill” is not always appropriate. We first check how heavily the pipe is blocked, what material it is made of and whether damage is already visible. On an old cast-iron pipe, too much pressure can do more harm than good. A modern plastic pipe offers different possibilities. The question of whether roots have only grown into a joint or have already penetrated the wall also influences the approach. That is why a camera inspection belongs before the choice of method, not after it.

Conclusion

High-pressure cleaning is the first choice for soft deposits. Pipe milling helps when roots, limescale or hard encrustations block the cross-section. The decisive factor is not one method alone, but the right diagnosis. We look inside the pipe before deciding and explain clearly why a particular method is suitable.
